Special Drumming Workshop with Tambacum!

Join us for an immersive drumming experience with Tambacum, where you’ll dive deep into the vibrant rhythms of Afro-Colombian music, “Tamborito” and “Cumbancha.” This workshop will focus on these “bailes cantados” (sung dances) from the Chocó region’s northern Pacific coast. You’ll learn the basics of traditional drumming and instruments, including Bongos, Timbas, Tamboras, Maracas, and Charrasca. You’ll be guided through exercises using your hands to master the fundamental sounds and rhythms.

We’ll begin with Tamborito, a dance accompanied by singing that celebrates courtship through expressive body movements. This is an excellent starting point for beginners to get comfortable with basic percussion beats. As we progress, we’ll move on to Cumbancha, a more advanced rhythm that requires more practice but offers a rich, immersive drumming experience.

Instruments like the Charrasca and Maracas will be introduced, where you’ll learn their traditional sounds and basic strokes. The Bongos and Timbas, though similar in technique, offer distinct sounds, with Bongos being more intricate and Timbas providing foundational beats. The Tambora will serve as the rhythm’s anchor, guiding the ensemble with its unique, harmonious patterns.

No prior experience is necessary, and all are welcome to participate. Bring your drum if you have one, and be prepared to continue practicing with the skills you learn. Those who excel in the rhythms will be invited to participate in future performances and workshops!
