DANCE BEYOND BORDERS for ages 9-12
with Sandra Bonilla, Joanne Bockmuehl-Jackson, Kim Waterman, Tom Truss, and Assistant Rubielle Nejaime

Dance Beyond Borders is a week of traveling through different cultures, worlds and styles of dance. This journey is designed for students who are interested in experiencing new ways of moving. The week-long program will include daily classes in classical dance foundations, as well as dances from Brazil, Africa, Spain and right here in New England. In addition, a daily class in the craft of dance making will inspire students to explore their own artistic language, drawing upon dance forms of their own creation and those studied throughout the week.

CONTEMPORARY & DANCE MAKING PROGRAM advanced beginner/intermediate for ages 11-13
With Tom Masters, Veronica Bone, Fern Katz, and Assistant Rubielle Nejaime

This program emphasizes contemporary dance training and site-specific dance creation culminating with a FREE performance of works inspired by Chesterwood’s history, sculpture and natural and architectural landscapes. The goal of this program is to introduce young people to Chesterwood’s heritage through the exploration of dance creation.

JULY BALLET SERIES Advanced beginner/intermediate for ages 11-13

This two-week class series offers ballet students the opportunity to maintain conditioning while further developing their technique and artistry.

BALLET INTENSIVE advanced beginner/intermediate, for ages 11-13
with Micheline Weiler, Moscelyne ParkeHarrison, Mio Ishikawa

This program will offer advanced beginner and intermediate level Ballet students an opportunity to expand their knowledge of Ballet as a traditional and contemporary art form, while experiencing its value as an effective tool for other dance forms.  While rooted in traditional values, our training offers the most current techniques. We uphold the highest professional standards while encouraging a non-competitive learning atmosphere that fosters the individuality of each student as a developing artist.  Classes will include Ballet technique with special themes in allegro, pirouettes, and adage, variations class including a pointe/pre-pointe barre, pas de deux, and mens work, a technical modern class and workshops in wellness and how best to care for the dancer’s body. This program is for students who have had at least 2 years of Ballet training and have participated in at least 3 classes per week in this past year. Students are required to complete an application in order to be considered for this program.

HIP HOP/STREET STYLE INTENSIVE, for all levels
With Andres Ramirez, Sereena Hunter, and Shakia Barron

In this week-long program, students will learn foundational movements and techniques of hip-hop and street styles alongside the cultural meaning and significance of these moves. The emphasis in this program is on social dancing and creativity. Styles will include beginner’s breakdancing, party grooves, and hip-hop choreography.

BALLET INTENSIVE Intermediate/Advanced, ages 14+
With Isadora Wolfe, Moscelyne ParkeHarrison and Mio Ishikawa

In this weeklong intensive, we aim to first create a safe environment for each student, nurturing their specific needs.  Drawing on classical Cecchetti and Vaganova methods, and incorporating contemporary knowledge of functional and healthy alignment, the days will consist of a daily a full-length ballet class including adagio and allegro work, pointe or pre-pointe class, strengthening and conditioning class including Pilates method, as well as supplementary classes including [Horton/Graham], and repertory.  Challenging all facets of the student’s artistry, our faculty will meet each artist where they are to refine their technical skills, strength, musicality, and foster their dynamic artistry.

CONTEMPORARY & DANCE MAKING SUMMER PROGRAM Intermediate/Advanced, ages 14+
With Isadora Wolfe and Joe Poulson

This two week contemporary program is designed for both pre-professional and professional dance artists. The curriculum blends rigorous contemporary training with creative process. Weather permitting, classes will be held outdoors on the historic grounds of The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts, with studio space on rain days inside carefully adhering to our strict COVID protocol.

Each day will begin with a contemporary dance technique class with focuses on honing mechanics of full bodied movement and floorwork, refining alignment and somatic awareness, incorporating various contemporary and modern dance forms into each artist’s practice. In addition to morning technique class, performance elements classes will dive into expanding our toolbox and find new ways to push ourselves and our palettes of movement quality with our imagination and theatrical development. Looking at physical patterns and deconstructing habits, we create change and growth in our technical practice, find our edges and explode our range, finding virtuosity in the large and small, through impact and release.

Afternoons are dedicated to creating, a crucial skill not only for choreographers but aspiring and working dancers. Utilizing studies of phrase making, composition, structured improvisations along with site specific, immersive and devised theater elements. With discernment and rigor we will push further the morning’s technical practices. The program will culminate in a showing of our works-in-progress on the beautiful grounds of the Mount.

Prepare to be exhausted, exhilarated, take risks and discover another level to your technical and creative process.
