2020 SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAMS
All classes are taught by Berkshire Pulse Performing Arts Program and guest faculty.
For Ages 8+
June 22-26, 9AM-3PM, Monday-Friday
This program is dedicated to hearing, seeing, feeling, creating and learning rhythms. On our first day of camp students will record rhythms found in and around Pulse and choose one to become their signature rhythm. Then we will make dances, music and art based off of these signature rhythms. Courses include Tap, Drumming, Hip-Hop and African Dance. There will be a sharing on the last day of camp of what was learned and created, for friends and family.
A Week for Boys
June 29-July 3, 9AM-3PM, Monday-Friday
This program is designed for the physically active boy who wants to learn, move, play and express in a non-competitive environment. Using acrobatics, Martial Arts and movement creation, in classes both indoors and out, this group of boys will build skills that develop confidence, coordination, strength and flexibility while expanding their movement vocabulary with each other and the world.
July 6-10, 9AM-3PM, Monday-Friday
This week is for movers who want to try out multiple forms of dance in an accepting, fun, friendly environment. Participants will study Modern, Ballet, dance making and get a taste of African and contemporary dance forms. This week provides an opportunity for new students to be introduced to dance and for experienced beginners to expand and further develop their skills.
Dance Beyond Borders
For ages 10+, All levels
July 13-17, 9AM-3PM, Monday-Friday
Dance Beyond Borders is a week of traveling through different cultures, worlds and styles of dance. This journey is designed for young dancers who are interested in experiencing new ways of moving while developing their technical and artistic skills. Emphasizing Modern dance technique, the program will also include dances from Brazil, Africa, Spain and right here in New England. In addition, a daily class in the craft of dance making will allow students the opportunity to create their own choreography, drawing upon dance forms of their own creation and those studied throughout the week.
Musical Theatre Intensive
June 22-July 3, 9AM-3:30PM Monday-Friday
Tired of always rehearsing for performance yet not getting a chance to improve your singing, dancing and acting skills? Then this program is for you! The Musical Theatre Intensive offers two weeks of rigorous training that will help you become a solid triple threat. Classes taught by top notch Broadway professionals and seasoned performers include tap, acting, improv, voice, audition techniques, Jazz, and Modern. Students will have private voice lessons, learn two Broadway dance numbers, one that includes singing and walk away with a monologue, two audition songs and how to feel more confident when onstage and auditioning.
For Level 2-4 (Advanced Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced level dancers ages 11-18
July 20-August 1, 9AM-3:30PM Monday-Friday, Final presentation August 1
Dancers, are you ready for more? Join us for an inspiring, robust and challenging two-week dance experience. With a focus on technique, diversifying skill and expanding artistic vocabulary, classes and workshops will include Modern, Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, Dance making, African, Hip Hop, Partnering, Flamenco.
This program is for students who have had at least two years of Ballet and/or Modern dance training and have participated in at least three classes per week during the school year. This intensive will end with a public performance on Saturday, August 1 at St. James Place, Great Barrington. Students are required to complete an application in order to be considered for this program.
Advanced Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced level dancers ages 11-18
August 3-7, 9AM-3:30PM
This program will offer Ballet students an opportunity to expand their knowledge of Ballet as a traditional and contemporary art form, while experiencing its value as an effective tool for other dance forms. While rooted in traditional values, our training offers the most current techniques. We uphold the highest professional standards while encouraging a non-competitive learning atmosphere that fosters the individuality of each student as a developing artist.
Daily classes will include Ballet technique with special themes in allegro, pirouettes, and adage; variations class including a pointe/pre-pointe barre, pas de deux, and mens work, Modern technique in the José Limón tradition and Pilates. Workshops in wellness and how best to care for the dancer’s body will also be offered. This program is for students who have had at least two years of Ballet training and have participated in at least 3 classes per week in this past year. Students are required to complete an application in order to be considered for this program.
