Discover the powerful connection between dance and African-diasporic traditions in this workshop dedicated to the art of movement and expression through the Afro-Colombian dance form, “Tamborito.” You will explore the foundational steps that involve footwork and expressive body movements, traditionally symbolizing courtship between men and women. Participants will learn the traditional elements of the dance, including the significance of dancing with a pollera (traditional skirt) and sombrero, which are integral to the performance. The workshop will also cover basic skirt movements (faldeo), and the various steps that make up the Tamborito dance. The space is open and inclusive, allowing anyone to learn and express themselves through dance, regardless of gender or previous experience. While Tamborito traditionally emphasizes gender-specific roles, this workshop encourages participants to learn both roles and explore the dance form in a way that feels most authentic to them. Come ready to dance, express yourself, and connect with the rich cultural heritage that these dances embody. Whether you’re new to dance or looking to deepen your understanding of Afro-Colombian traditions, this workshop offers a welcoming environment to learn and grow.
All Levels – This class is open to all. Teachers will gauge experience and teach to the level of the group present.
