Modern 3 will focus on exploring the Horton technique—a whole-body, anatomical movement approach rooted in a blend of Native American folk dances, Afro-Caribbean styles, and precise body studies. Horton technique has been the standard training at Alvin Ailey Dance Center since 1969. This class emphasizes defined shapes—such as flat backs, lateral Ts, deep lunges, and hinges—as well as how a dancer can move through sequences with energy, strength, and expression. Students will navigate sustained extensions, dynamic swing series, and improvisation to build flexibility, coordination, discipline, and individual artistry. Designed for intermediate dancers invited into Level 3 who have experience in modern dance, studio etiquette, and a readiness for corrections, this class challenges dancers to take creative risks while maintaining spatial awareness and precision.
