2026 Winter Workshops

African Dance Workshop

Saturday, February 14, 4:00-6:00pm

with Tara Murphy and Aimee Gelinas

For Adults/Teens 16+
Beginning/Open Level, with LIVE drumming!

For millennia, drumming and dance in Africa have brought people together to create peace and happiness. Here in America, dance and drumming can be used in the same way — to relieve stress and connect with yourself and community. Tara Murphy teaches basic African movement styles, as well as traditional rhythms and dances from Mali, Guinea and Senegal, West Africa. This dance will get your blood pumping and your heart soaring….feel the rhythms and shake what you got! The class emphasizes community, self-expression and the joy of movement. On this Valentine’s Day class, we will emphasize the energy of the heart within African dance, giving love to ourselves and others.

Inspired by real stories of survival and resilience, participants will engage in improvisation and choreography repertoire- to bring personal and collective histories to life.

Students will reflect on their own family stories – choosing a word or phrase to explore through movement – and learn two original phrases from the 3rd Gen Project show repertoire.

Accompanied live by composer Luke Wygodny, this experience offers participants a window into the company’s creative rehearsal process.
